19. DISCLOSURE

– Italy, February 2017 –

A stiff silence had enveloped Zai’s human company inside the rudimentary command bridge of the rocking vessel. The faces staring back at her were dumbfounded and rigid. But she could sense a curious ripple of hope and dread together, and this allowed her to maintain her poise.

‘Only a fragment of your species remains. And we need your support if we’re to prevent the Rabast from laying further waste on the nations surrounding this quadrant,’ was Zai’s prelude to a long monologue, and their reaction to this was justified.

Her monologue included key moments of the Collapse, with the exclusion of anything even closely related to the Evox Cores, the Scientists, and the monstrosity of a foe they created.

Should we ever tell them it was us who bio-engineered the Rabast? she wondered halfway through her speech.

Before they could fully comprehend the Collapse, she opened the topic of bioengineering, about how her people had cradled mankind since their founding in a genesis lab all the way to the early habitation of the planet. Facts about evolution were corrected and gaps were filled; knowledge so great that she could almost see their brains flourishing.

‘Incredible,’ gasped a dewy-eyed man who had earlier introduced himself as James Rivers. Eventually, he had to wipe the tears from his leathery cheeks. ‘How many more … people are out there?’

‘The Galactic Alliance’s founding members were three at first: Pleodians, Babylonians, and Gheloon,’ Zai said, feeling the air thicken with the struggle of comprehension. ‘Then joined the Xa’an and the Terakt.’

Ethan and an ebony man of warrior physique swapped looks, a thread of understanding binding the two.

‘We coexisted in different colonies in an interstellar network that spanned seventeen systems across this arm of the galaxy,’ Zai said. ‘You were to be the sixth member. The … unexpected arrival of the Rabast, however, brought ruin to this alliance, severing the potential nurturing which we had planned for you.’

‘Is that why we went haywire as a species?’ The ebony man put a hand on his big chest and said, ‘Colonel Caleb Green.’

Zai returned a slight nod of acknowledgement, then said, ‘Nothing is without flaw. But you were relatively young compared to the other races, unguided, relying on the biological programming of your original design.’

‘So, a template that remained unchanged and unrefined,’ said one man with round glasses of magnification and a crescent of facial hair above his top lip.

‘Let the … woman speak, George,’ Caleb said. He emanated a certain power in the room, and not just from his great size. He was cut from the same material that made the greatest fighters of New Averah.

‘We couldn’t have come from a jar,’ said another man, pushing his chair back as he stood. He stuck a finger in the air. ‘There’s only one creator.’

‘Jesus,’ said Ethan, dropping his face into his hands and shaking his head.

‘Yeah, Him!’ the man said. ‘We’ve got evidence that proves his existence. What does she have?’

‘Tell your guy to watch his tone,’ Donovan directed at Caleb.
